Practically everyone who grew up within a 20 mile radius of our Gallery has at least one memory (and probably many more) of that Summertime icon of family fun – Hoffman’s Playland.
Indeed, even now, in the midst of the workday here in our Store, the sound of that familiar train bell reminds us that Summer is again here! And every so often with that reminder, come the memories of times at the Playland with our own daughters riding the carousel or taking their first big risk on the roller coaster. On a really good day we may even conjure up a memory or two from our own childhood!
There’s something about the constancy of it all. Every year, Spring rolls around, things begin to green up ever so slightly – and as if by some unknown force of Nature – the Playland comes to life once again, giving us all the chance to create still more memories with our little ones. It’s been somehow reassuring to know that some things really do stay the same.
With all the talk and speculation of the Playland’s “closing”, “selling”, or “moving”, we were thrilled to hear that one of our Artist’s, Susan Coon, wanted to create a painting of the Playland that would freeze it in Time before any such changes came about.
And, in what we can only describe as a most generous act, she wished to present it to Dave and Ruth Hoffman to celebrate over 60 years of providing wholesome family fun, and to simply say thank you.
So, in an effort to create a venue for this “moment”, we are hosting a little get-together at the Gallery to showcase the painting and to provide all who attend the opportunity to meet the artist, Sue, as well as Dave and Ruth. We encourage everyone to bring along their favorite snapshots as well as a story or two about this “Family Place to Be”.
